The stories presented in MOONLIGHT portraits reveal extraordinary capacity and reach of one of the greatest writers of fantasy literature of the pulp era. As a true master of the genre, Carl Jacobi had a highly evocative prose style, able to open up entire worlds to the imagination of readers. In this second volume are united in strictly chronological order, some of his best stories, atmosphere and variety ranging from horror and the macabre, the fantastic science fiction, though they are all covered by that particular sense of wonder that was the hallmark of the author. "Carl Jacobi," writes one of the world's leading experts of pulp literature, "is a clever writer whose stories of the supernatural, carefully constructed, are often worthy to be compared with those of HP Lovecraft" (see Lee Server, Encyclopedia of Pulp Fiction Writers , Checkmark Books, 2002, p. 155). And Lovecraft himself considered his talent "phenomenal" to the point of congratulating him in a letter, referring to the ability of narrative Jacobi, wrote that "... your versatility is certainly greater than mine. "
E i sedici capolavori qui riuniti, molti dei quali pubblicati sul mitico magazine, spiccano per qualità e atmosfera: da “Matthew South & Co.”, suggestiva psychological horror story that plays with the theme of "double" to "Witches in Maize," where acting by two grim magic scarecrow in "The Barrier Singleton," with its eerie landscape and left, and the horrors of witchcraft that open to the worlds beyond of the barrier. Without forgetting the "Portrait Moonlight," the story that gives the title to this collection, a supernatural fantasy reminiscent of Wilde and Hawthorne, and "Strange happenings at the Tavern of the Galloping Horse," with its exotic tale that revolves around the ruins of an ancient inn, home of old legends and superstitions, and its weird tower that evokes a past of piracy and witchcraft, whose horrors are reflected in the present. Here, then, the disturbing profile of the looming "Elcar Special", a mysterious car which changes the personalities of the men who lead it, and the spectral shape of the grotesque "Cocomacaque. And then there's the bizarre "theory LaPrell, one of the classical Jacobi, whose base is one of the favorite themes of the author: the existence of parallel universes and other dimensions that intersect with our world . And yet
stories, dipped into shadow and mystery. No one, after reading the "bad things to Carver House, forget the next atmosphere, dark and claustrophobic, Carver House, with its unpleasant things. In that dismal scenario, the County of Carver, Jacobi sets her tales weird. Here, his characters move in strange towns and lonely, desolate countryside or in misty hills, the places where everything rests on an unfortunate sense of suspense and menace. And where even the rural banality behind a wall crumbling follies and horrors may lurk timeless ... And here, once again, the shadow of Lovecraft is revealed behind such stories as "The Aquarium", which bring to mind the typical narrative situations and concerns of the Master of Providence, or "The Port of the Raven "with the horrendous sacrifices to a god-toad perpetrated on stone altars, the blasphemous grimoires and the dark mysteries of the past resurface to enthrall the present ...
